Boar infestation

Postby neiowanderer » Sat Jul 10, 2010 9:04 pm

We have quite a few boars sitting around our budding township... we are all *very* young players, and have no means of killing them. They are eating away at our HHP and moral, several players are close to quitting.

What can we do about these pests?
I tried fencing them in with construction posts but that just lead to more untimely incapacitations, before the boar wandered off.

I would make a post in the trade channel, but we have nothing of real value to give.

For the short term, build stick fences around your houses and plots. Wild animals will never spawn in claimed land, so if you have a fence around it, it should provide a safe place to run to to escape boars.

Definitely get at least a wooden fence, and definitley claim all the land in your fence.

But that doesn't keep you safe when you have to venture outside of your fence, however. Maybe one of you should invest in combat to deal with them?

A fresh newbie stands no chance against a boar in melee. However, a fully-enclosed fence that includes a boulder for slingstone ammo might be adequate if you've got the patience to pepper the beast with pebbles for a good long time. You can allegedly escape from boars with the third movement speed option, but I've had them chase my full stamina bar into emptiness before getting stomped, your mileage may vary.

In my experience, I've drained 100% of my stamina bar sprinting away from boars only to have them catch up to me a few seconds later. Probably the only way to escape them is to have a boat handy, and row 2 supergrids away from it.

Boats are definitely useful for dropping their aggro, but you don't have to go too far. Once their picture disappears is enough. Also, running away will work if you don't burn all your stamina. The key here is to use terrain to your advantage, since running over mudflats, grasslands, pavement, etc will drain your stamina much slower than running through native forest terrain. If you are just trying to run away through the forest, you're right, they will most likely catch up to you again. Running TO somewhere is also useful, if you have a house or building nearby you can duck into to wait them out. Aggro will drop and then you can go back outside. Just try not to reaggro it again.

Yeah I dunno how close you are to water, but if you have a boat you can actually lead the boars away from your settlement. Ive done this several times in these first few days I've been playing. I jump in my boat with a sling and some rocks, hit 'em upside the head with a rock to get their attention, then paddle down stream about one full screen away maybe more (not too far cuz then you'll lose agro and have to go back and regain agro. The trick here is to get back on dry land long enough so they can calculate a path to you and start heading your way, otherwise they'll just sit where you left them. Don't stray too far from your boat and right click it as soon as you step out, because they'll be in your screen in a short time. Once the boar is in visual range, jump back in and sail away. You can do this for as long as you want, as far as you want.

You could build some straight roads from/to you settlement, or to a escape haven (fenced bolder), that way you only really have to make it to the road, and after that you can run for a long time/distance without draining you stamina at a deadly rate. Having some water with you to drink can be a life saver to.

The trick I always use (although I have somewhat high constitution and armor so I take a few hits) is bring a full waterskin every time I go forage, fish, etc. I known my area pretty well, therefore everytime I see danger I know where the water is. Water is a lifesaver, and running at 3x speed is crucial to make it there in time. You can take two-three sips of water before you have to click to walk again; with practice I'm sure you can manage.

If you don't have leather for a waterskin, make a waterflask (requires any raw hide, even rabbit works).

Having roads that you can run on is a big deal, at Run speed(Third speed) you can outrun them, on paved tile you lose little/no stamina when running, you only lose significant amounts when sprinting.

Fences, claims, these all deter boars, but you really want someone to roll hunter, get a decent sling going and start pelting the buggers with rocks from safety, if anything just to keep them away.
