Postby Gromit » Sun Jul 11, 2010 12:51 pm

So, the only way i know how to kill a boar is by sling. and each time i shoot a boar twice or more, they end up running. how can i kill them when running and how do i stop them running?

From reading the wiki, it suggests to click the button next to the Animal's picture on the top right corner to de-aggro them.

If you chose shoot again just before de-aggroing, you have a very good chance of killing them with that final shot without moving one step.

Paradoxically, it is often easier for a noob hunter to kill animals than it is for a mid-range player. This is because when you first started plunking away at animals using a sling you were doing ten and fifteen points of damage with each hit and the creature didn't realise the danger it was in. But now that your marksmanship and perception are climbing you can finally deal some real damage. Just when hunting was supposed to get easier and not take so long... the critters have begun to realise that this doesn't just tickle and they bolt almost as soon as the first blood is shed.

There are several approaches to cornering the quarry. First of all be aware that you can actually out run a boar on forest terrain because your slow run is faster than his top speed. It is even easier on pavement or road. Of course he has more stamina than you but a waterskin will give you the advantage in the department too. Once the boar has bolted he will no longer attack you so it is safe to emerge from your boat or your enclosure and start sprinting after him. He won't hit back unless the aggro drops and you don't want to lose aggro because if you do you lose all the learning points you would have gotten for the damage you did so far. If you can lay hands on some really good armor (second hand undamaged bronze?) you may wish to try attacking from the open ground right from the start. It is possible to have armor good enough that you survive his attacks until you can get him started running, and in this case the sooner he starts running the better.

The first thing I will suggest is to pick your ground carefully. It is often possible to find a narrow spit of land where you can see a river on the other side from your boat. Hunting here makes it easier to catch up to the runaway because he doesn't have the space to get far away from you. He will normally go bolting directly away from you, so when you are about to attack you can sometimes position yourself so that his flight will send him in a dead end direction. It there is a bit of land like this quite close to your base a few minutes work building some fences can make escape difficult for any animal you choose to hunt in that location. (Except rabbits and chickens!)

If an animal in a fight is healed by deer in the middle of the battle it is sufficiently heartened so that it is less likely to run away. In the beginning a deer ambling up to observe your combat was deeply annoying. At this point sometimes it can be a great help. Say a level III boar should be nice and easy for you at this point, if only the darned thing wasn't so ready to run. Try attacking a low level boar around low level deer. If the deer are healing 32 hit points per round and your are consistently doing more than 32 points of damage it will take awhile but you will win and the boar will die all while thinking he can take what you are dishing out.

You can also try building an enclosure for the boar without allowing him to aggro on you in the process. This is tricky. This is dangerous. Your chance of success is generally dependant on the boar being in just the right position so that while he is behind the tree and can't see you, you can build a short section of unbuilt fires from the corner of that pallisade to the water. You might want to experiment with putting your boat down in exactly the right spot. It makes an ideal boar barrier. If you are deft at hopping ashore, picking up the boat and placing it in exactly the right location it becomes a hiding place for you while you build, or part of the wall stopping your dinner from escaping. Wagons work too.

You can also try hunting with a group. If you and four noob friends all start pelting the beast with stones you might just manage to kill him before he can figure out that this is no situation in which to stand his ground.

But the truth is these solutions are only going to work sometimes and they won't always work well. What you are running up against is the fact that it is time for you to switch combat styles. Noobs who want to kill something larger than a rat or a chicken are advised to take up ranged. That's the place you begin. It looks like you are well beyond that point and you need to decide if you prefer melee to unarmed. It doesn't hurt to throw a lot of points into unarmed even if you are a ranged hunter. This way when you are out picking mushrooms and wearing your backpack and some boar suddenly decides you are in his territory and shouldn't be, you will not be ko'd almost instantly by his attack but will have time to run for the cabin. I prefer unarmed to melee. It's not as effective at this stage but the chief defense of melee is "shield" and that requires you to go around with one which means you can't carry around as much other stuff. With unarmed you set your defense to dodge and forget about it.

If you are determined to go on with ranged, then it is probably time to start investing in really excellent archery equipment. Aiming will take much longer, but a good arrow fired out of a ranger's bow does way more damage than any stone. There's no longer any way to lower the damage that you do. You can't reduce your perception and your exploration. But you can double or triple the damage with the right equipment. In the end the very best way to stop a boar from running is to kill him in one hit.

Take away its credit card!

....

Wait, that doesn't make any sense.

Have you considered building a hunting trap with a gate? It'll work on anything that isn't an extremely angry bear channeling the spirit of the KoolAid Man.
