Equip sling, have stones in inventory.

Select shoot, your arrow changes to an arrow.

Now with no windows open, click the animal (Left click), this will bring up an Aim Meter, this meter will gradually raise (Very slow at low MM, get at least 10 before starting, 20 suggested if you have a q10 sling).

The aim meter represents your accuracy chance. Even with most of the meter filled, there's a good chance you could miss anyway thanks to the laws of probability.

On the other hand a lousy shot could still hit.

MM increases the fill speed of the meter, but does not affect anything else besides the quality softcap of any ranged weapons you craft. Damage is determined by your perception and the quality of the weapon and ammunition you are using.

Either way, the animal will start to assault you if you didn't hit it hard enough, so you should probably be doing this inside an enclosure (or better yet, with the animal in the enclosure) so that it won't claw your unarmored face off.
