My general questions!

Postby Sparrow245 » Wed Jul 14, 2010 5:05 am

I decided to save some space on the forums, and will be using this topic as a question topic, where I will post all of my questions, of course. That is all.

This is strange. I cannot seem to gather seeds from certain crops. Instead of gathering the seeds, I get the actual crop.
The same thing happens in reverse, though. Sometimes I get seeds, but no crop.
Can anyone explain this?

Certain seeds (Peapods, Onions, a few others I can't think of atm) give you actual 'crops', not 'crop seeds', these vegetables either don't have 'seeds' or instead have an option to obtain seeds at certain points (Carrots for example)

Peapods, onions, carrots, beetroots and peppercorns function as their own seeds in addition to being the actual crop. Carrots also have seeds if you pick them early, but who the hell even bothers doing that anyway.

Everything else gives their "crop" in addition to the seeds, although with wheat it can be argued that both the straw and the seeds are crops. In addition to getting beetroots, you will also get some beetroot leaves which also function as a crop of some sort.

Hemp buds are unplantable, so picking it at that time (flowering) will yield absolutely no kind of seed whatsoever.

Edit: Grapes contain their own seeds, so it's first a crop, then a seed. :P

Yes. I noticed this with the carrots and the onions. Thanks for the clarifying this for me. It means a lot.

I apologize for my double post. Now that this topic is being used as a general questions topic, it's not quite "resolved" just yet.

I encountered another problem on my adventures, today. I checked out the wiki, to see where I could obtain clay. It recommended digging in a mudflat. I go and attempt this, but I do not get any clay from it. I get learning points, but when I check my inventory, I have not gained any clay, or anything else for that matter.

Is this a bug, or am I doing something wrong?

You're not doing anything wrong, you're just not near a clay node. To be able to extract any amount of clay, you need to be near a clay node. If you're near one, you'll notice that you can take multiple pieces in a row, usually of quality higher than 10. If you're NOT near one, you'll get about one piece of clay per 10x10 area.

Is there some kind of method to finding this node, or is it just chance?

As far as I can tell, you just have to wander around digging aimlessly until you luck out and get something higher than q10, which indicates you're somewhere near a deposit that hasn't been totally exploited. Not that I'm a clay-collecting expert or anything, I've found maybe ten pieces of clay ever. I'm also unclear on if personal beliefs toward nature or industry have any effect; the clay page on the wiki suggests that industry belief increases the success of clay-gathering efforts, but the personal beliefs page doesn't say anything at all about clay.

To clarify on what Twerp said, yes, you basically just wander around lake and river shores and now mudflats and try digging up clay until you find a node.

Regarding Nature/Industry, that only affects collecting from "gray clay" (gray circle along rivers), "cave clay" (white circles in water in caves), and "feldspar" (gray triangles on mudflats) clay resources, that appear on the ground like herbs. In the case of these, having full Nature gives you only a 50% of getting the clay, and full Industry gets you two clay per spot. Just to reiterate, "ball clay" and "acre clay" which are both found by digging into the ground in shallows and mudflats respectively, are unaffected by the Nature/Industry slider.
