Afaik yes, it's annoying because they seem to prefer the barrel as wel.

calves don't eat from the trough. they only drink milk from a barrel or their mother. what i'm asking is if milk feeding has the same mechanism as the trough does for full grown animals.

My apologies, I misunderstood your question - and tbqh, I did not know calfs will drink milk from barrels as well.

they do , confirmed about the range, i place a barrel on the other side of a door and could still drink from it
