Combat: yellow number?

I don't really get the battle system yet, I'll read on the wiki and try to fight ants...
But there's something I didn't seem to find mentioned there. When I hit something with a stone, there's a yellow number and a red number. I assume the red number is the damage I dealt, but what's the yellow number?

One number is shp, the other is hhp.

Are these numbers related to "damage" and "grievous damage" (martial and death beliefs respectively)?

Yes, "grievous damage" is synonymous with HHP damage.
