Can't build a house - what gives?

Postby gord » Wed Jul 21, 2010 1:14 am

I'm trying to build a Timber House. I have a 7x11 area paved, but when I go to place the house build marker, nothing happens - I don't get a "you can't build here" message, my character just walks up to that spot and does nothing. I've been trying to place this marker for ten minutes now. Any ideas?

I'd guess something is in the way.

The only objects nearby were a couple of apple trees on the edge of the paved area, which I've already chopped down (which sucks since they were pretty much my sole reason for settling where I did), but haven't removed the stumps yet. If indeed the stumps are in the way (even though they're a paved cell away from the proposed house wall) it might be worth making a note somewhere that any objects within x distance of a house boundary will prevent that building from being placed, to save others some grief in the future. This seems strange though - I've built several houses right up against trees with no problem.

Edit: Okay, yeah, no. It wasn't the stumps. Are there any other restrictions on building (e.g. within so many cells of a body of water)?
Edit the second: I relogged and was able to place the marker. RIP apple trees.

The only other reason I can find, whatsoever, for it failing without an error message other than there being stuff in the way, is if you're trying to build it on claimed land that you lack access to. In that case, the claims would blink, however.

Since it worked after a relog, I'm assuming there was just some screwy packet latency going on somewhere. No worries; just show up ingame with a sack full of high-level loot for me and all will be forgiven. ;)

ETA: I think I would look very dashing in a tank.
