What does a lake look like?

Well, i don't really understand what a lake looks like in this game. The place i always go is a river. Can anybody help?

It's just a really big, generally oval shaped body of water. Rivers can feed into and out of it. That about sums it up?

Oh, so what i saw was a lake... I was at a river and it mounded at a big circle of water. Is that a lake? That means i can get Plaice's there?

Yup, that's a lake. Depending on the moon your luck with fish spawns at the lake you'll likely be able to catch Plaice there.

I've actually noticed that an alarming number of lakes (and terrain features in general) seem to be dick-shaped.

The type of fish available at a location and the ideal lures for them are dependent on the moon cycles. Day or night doesn't matter, just what cycle the moon is on. The wiki has a lot of information on this, actually:

You can tell what cycle the moon is on at night when it passes by your little clock thingy.
