Suggestion on finding the best spot to settle

Postby arakys87 » Sat Jul 24, 2010 12:58 am

Hi there guys.

First of all I have to say just "wow" this is the best sandbox experience i'm having since ultima online's time and I can really start to feel the same as like in the ol' good days.

But now, let's go to the point ^^

I've created a LOT of characters, hoping to find a "nice" place to start builiding my insignificant settlement but it seems that bad luck is haunting me. Any time I start a new character i found myself in harsh places, sorrounded by those nasty boars, i've just "wasted" 1 hour of my time walking around the place where i was born and i never found a single rabbit .. not even a chicken! I'm just alone .. with those boars .. no Apples / Berries .. no future development prospective then ! The first steps of the game proceeds quite well .. i build a leanto, some baskets, fire .. learn lumber. . but then again i found myself always in a dead spot .. i can't manage to find chickens for "upgrading" to fishing, no fruits, no bread 5-6 km only to find a single rabbit :'(

So I would like to receive some pointers .. i've read some guides around here and they all basically says that i need hunting first for creating materials for fishing gear, but what if i don't find apples nor rabbits and then no fishing ? How you all managed to start in the long past?

Thanks for the time and again good luck to the devs, you are genius ^^

(Btw sorry for my english)

If its chickens your looking for I advise moors, Theres no boars, but they stop being a problem once you have a fence, and also theres chicken herds there with aurochesn and mourchs (spelling is probally wrong.) only problem is not too much wood, Try to find a moor with a decidous and coniferous forest at the ends of it. Try not to only eat chickens though, it will raise your dexterity too much and everything will be out of balance.

No matter where you start at in the world, there is always a food supply if you know where to look.

No matter where you start at in the world, there is always something lurking beyond your field of vision ready to knock you unconscious.

To be honest, this experience will benefit you in the long run but I digress. An ideal location would be somewhere where there are plenty of trees and other natural resources i.e. clay, water, fauna. Also be wary of settling next to other people. Chances are if you can walk around and find someone, someone can walk around and find you and that could be either a good thing or a bad thing.

I am feeling rather generous so if you ever think about giving up and starting anew, I offer you a place at my humble pumpkin patch.

You should try living in one spot for a while so you will know more about what you want in a place. Then find a better place to build a more permanent settlement.

Perhaps joining in with an already built settlement to guide you along might be a good idea.

Hey folks, thanks everyone for your precious replies and thanks for the place in the pumpkin patch :P !

But i'm that kind of guys which eventually will bash his head against a wall until or the wall is down or my skull is red .

I think i've just been overwhelmed by the open-spaced world and wasted too much time wandering that actually calm down and being constructive. I appreciate the precious tips, i guess I'll try to find a place in grassland and far away from other players, for now, just for familiarize with game mechanics.

Thank you all again for the help and may you have a nice weekend ^^

You remind me of myself when I first started. Don't be a stranger. Consult the Wiki for most of your questions but don't be afraid to ask questions in the forum if you're still confused about something.

Set up shop in a broadleaf forest if you can. Y'know, the kind with apple trees. It's easy food for when you're getting the hang of the game mechanics, since you don't need any tools or skills to collect it. Get the boat-building skill when you can, boats are the fastest and safest way to explore and find yourself a nice happy home. Just don't build right along the riverside, or you'll be tempting other river-goers (rivers are kinda like roads, really).
