Any time you eat any food for the first time in a given "bar", it reduces the total needed. This includes foods that don't give any FEPs, and in fact any other item that raises hunger at all (thus including beer and wine). I'm not sure what the exact percentage reduction is based on, if it's dependant on the food's FEP gains (if it has any, and a base value otherwise) or if it's just based on your requirement.
Either way, eating a variety of foods, particularly at higher end requirements, can be pretty handy. A q1 carrot may only give a fraction of a point of perc when you need 100 FEP for a stat, but might lower the required FEPs by 2-3. Wine, Beer, and bread are a must to keep around for this if you really want to drop it as much as possible, apples and hazelnuts are good too, and if you're full barbarism you can use raw meats for this as well.

When the FEP bar fills, one of your attributes will increase by 1. Which one is picked is chance based depending on how much of each type of FEP you have vs. the total FEP in the bar. Suppose you fill up your bar with a total of 15 FEP; 10 Str, 3 Dex, and 2 Psy. The chance your one attribute that will raise will be Str is 66.7%, Dex is 20%, and Psy is 13.3%.
If you just eat one type of food, the FEP you need to fill the bar is equal to your highest attribute. For each additional food type that gives you FEP, the total FEP you need to fill the bar is reduced.
