How many lumps of coal to smelt ore into a bar?

^ Topic. I'm really wary on removing trees for fuel, so I want to know the minimum number of coal units it takes.

It takes 4 units of coal.
However, due to a glitch in the smelting and burning things in general, you can leave the ore there for awhile, come back, and smelt it with ONE piece of charcoal.
