Some total newbie problems

Postby ciscovazquez » Wed Jul 28, 2010 12:30 pm

Hey guys. I found out about this yesterday and so far I'm loving the freedom and open-endedness and the whole survivalist vibe.

A couple of issues-
I've been trying to complete a fishing rod but I can't find anything to use as string. One of the other threads on this forum talk about some herb that can be used as string but it doesn't seem to grow in the area I'm in currently.

Secondly, about combat- every creature in the game world except rabbits kills me- foxes, bears, even ants. I've taken will to power, unarmed combat and brawling and put an additional 4 points in the unarmed attribute. what am I doing wrong?
Food is becoming a big problem because the bread from the starter area chest has run out, and rabbits are few and far between.

Thanks!

1. http://havenandhearth.wikia.com/wiki/String Some items require you to have PERCxEXP to see them

2. Rabbits, find a heath to get chickens (heath looks like a desert but with green grassish stuff on it) and i'd advise you to get your marksman up to atleast 10 and get a sling either 10 or higher (since your new) and box foxes in so they cant get out and range them down, as for boars you'll need higher marksman as they will kill you easly without armor, do not brawl these if your a newbie. Also, for fishing you'll need the following

Rod
String
Hook (and bait for the hook)
OR a craft -> tools -> fishing gear to replace the hook and bait.

Thanks for the help Gromit. I was able to find the herb after putting a few points in Exploration. I've got a fully equipped fishing rod now. I haven't been able to see any fishing spots yet so I'm guessing I need to either learn swimming or build a boat in order to get to them? Will swimming do or should I wait till I have enough LP to learn boatbuilding?

DO NOT BUY SWIMMING, IT IS SUICIDE BUTTON, literally. learn boat making and make a boat or find a boat. fishing spot = fish jumping out of water.

Buy swimming, it's the best.
