The easiest and often best way to tame animals is to trap them all individually with sign posts. This just means you need tons of branches to lock the animals in. Attempting to tame 1 will lead to the entire herd swarming you, so you can't miss blocking in even one.

Leadership, Fire and Ice, and Tricks and Ruses help a lot if you're unfamiliar with the corner trick. Call down the thunder(leadership) to buildup initiative, evil eye(Tricks and Ruses) to reduce their attack to 0, then Sidestep(I think this is unarmed combat?) a few times to get maximum combat modifier. After that's all done, Consume the Flames(Fire and Ice) to return battle intensity to 0. Then use Quell the beast. x5

Leather armor, pants, helm, and shoes help a lot as they'll reduce the damage you might take. Be prepared to do this 5 times to tame each individual animal. You'll also need rope equipped to use Quell the beast.

Set up cornerposts like so:
Code: Select all
XX-
XAX
XXX

A being animal, X being fences, - being air.

You walk into the tile - and can attack the animal (it can also hit you), by moving in/out you can do the whole thing without getting hit.

You can also do this if you have nearby access to water and have sufficient shallow water to walk on to avoid the wrath of the animals. Animals will not be able to attack you if you hide on the shallow tiles, allowing you to set up a much more convenient and simple trap to hold one or two animals at a time. This will also allow you to reach the animals and move back and forth similar to that of the corner trick. This is best used if you intend to tame the Entire herd though, as just because you tame one does not mean the rest will break aggro with you.
