Hm. Mercy. Stupid newbies need mercy because they're stupid. Experience is a good teacher and will make them smart.
Then again, putting fear into their hearts also makes them smart.
I myself would track a newb thief down, tell him what I knew, and offer to help him learn. We'd both make a new friend and instead of stealing from me he could simply ask in the future. At very least he could apologise, and I'd let him be and let him keep what he stole. (Consider it a gift.)
If he can't do that and just wants to be an asshole, I'd KO him, strip him, and tell him he's dead next time he steals from me. Or get someone to do that for me. Or just steal some of his crap.
