Forgive my ignorance, but how would this stop the glitch? Would it stop them from being able to make the minehole in the first place?

You cant build minehole if theres digged area/cave under the place you want to place it.

Thanks kindly for pointing that out Cloakblade. That simple solution slipped past a lot of us.

Edit: You should be able to place it but when you finish it will fail.
