im pretty sure some people know where her main char lived, so they can find the goods and get them back.
surely her main wasnt so famous, but i recognize many of her posts. (even the one she deleted with a ridicule story.)

this actually convinces me more not to trust new accounts who have played the game longer than the join date.
and even when someone has got a good record on one's main, we all know he/she can always act as a different role on alts.

Simply join a village that doesn't care about you stealing a bunch of valuable items from a well known merchant and don't tell anyone where you're residing.

This was rather interesting if for no other reason than it brought to question a lot of things we just accept otherwise. Alt scamming is sort of a strange topic to deal with in the first place. In terms of game mechanics it's highly broken as you leave no scents and no way for the grieved to find retribution. In terms of power use it is a means of power balance of sorts as in the past people have complained that because mods can see ips they have an unfair advantage over other players. If everyone has access to this then there is no imbalance and everything is par.

On the other hand this is a reputation based market and trading with people who have no reputation at all should carry risks. It gives incentive to form positive relationships with others and establish a form of community for security.

I suppose this worked out alright even if neither party is going to walk away happily; as you're keeping the goods and traders don't get to string you up.

Yeah, I agree. I'm surprised things like this don't happen more often. The traders could easily make it so that you would leave scents by putting their trading post on a landclaim and only trading with people who have theft, though.

Good luck with that, because I'm holding everything on an alt that won't log on for several weeks. The best you can do is destroy his hearth fire.

Good idea, I guess. I could go make bricks for the russians or something. You know, I'm not usually a thief. This is actually the first time I did something like this. now everybody's going to remember me as a criminal though... xD

This is just wise advice in general for traders. Trade with individuals that you can trust or trade in circumstances that are safe.

The punishment for you will be that you will be having a hard time to find someone to trade with in the future or even find someone to play with. Nobody trusts a thief that is even hiding his true face.

Not if I start a new character. My main is pretty pathetic anyways.

better yet, if the village doesnt agree, threaten the villagers you were with, get your HF bashed and summon you while you are gone. if villagers disagree, kill all the villagers for protecting a petty thief, who also wanted to build rental vaults for theives.

The villagers are respectable people and don't deserve this. They didn't know what I was going to do. You should just leave them alone, IMO. And how are you going to summon me without having scents?

lol you got me there, right, nobody can summon you without a scent left by your new alt.

but if you feel sorry for your villagers, you should let your villagers to turn you in for the solution.
the whole community would know which village you had lived with and they wouldnt be able to trade if they dont act out.
it is their fault to take a douche like youself as a villager, after all ;)

They'll be able to trade. Like I said, they didn't know what I was going to do, they're pretty much innocent in this. I'm the douche, they were just bystanders who had no clue what was going on. As a matter of fact, I just quit the village to avoid tainting their reputation. They probably would want nothing to do with me after something like this and I can certainly understand why. I have a confession to make: What I said about giving them the stuff was a lie. In reality, they don't know anything about this yet, the stuff is on an alt miles away from me.

Look, I'm not gonna be a sacrificial goat. Whether you want to trust my village or not is your choice, but they did nothing wrong and I think you know it. I'm not just gonna walk to the execution stand to be lynched, you know?
