OP, get your leather on claimed area (needs Yemanry)
Then get a palisade up and protect your home by boxing it with the palisade with a gate to allow you to enter and exit.
IMPORTANT. Seal your cornerpost after you are done.
Finally put the key you obtain from the gate onto an alt that will open and close your gate, never keep your keys onto your person.
