What you failed to calculate when pairing the whale up against the troll skull is:
1)Quality.
Troll skull is base LP of q200, it's probably the lowest you'll find. Whale is q10 (unless you're a derp)
2)Total LP does matter. A pearl is great LP/hr, but you won't at 5x the price of a troll skull because it's ~5x more LP/Hour.
With that said a troll skull still kicks a whale's ass in total LP and quality, the only reason to have both is if you're going 'away' for a while and want to fill your mentory while gone for some nice total LP when back.

I assume that you would also need to accommodate your mentory with shew bread, bronze steed, and other curiosities that have long study time but large reward when finished.
