Other MMO's have more then 2 people working on it.

I just find it strange that jorb's defense is simply "oh well it's gonna happen anyway so why even bother!"

It's a bit more difficult for them to prevent it. Other MMO's got a whole staff dedicated to combating bots, Haven has...well Jorb and Loftar, and only Loftar would be capable of doing that (as far as I'm aware). So he could either spend time combating it, or spend time updating...

I don't mind the mindset that "it's out of our scope" or "our time is better spent balancing the game" but he posts like it's literally impossible to enforce any semblance of client security to try and curb outside modding like this.

Would you waste your time with something that would not work anyway?

Well, I won't speculate as to what draconian measures other MMOs may or may not have taken to prevent botting (because I'm scared to find out), but the fundamental fact of the matter is that as long as the user has control over the system he uses he is also fundamentally in control of what input goes into the machine and of how the machine represents whatever output it has to represent. What we could do is make people jump through more hoops in order to control the input and/or output, but at the end of the day we cannot prevent them. Playing that hoops game has never appealed to loftar or myself, and we wouldn't do it even if we did have the resources to hire a policing team. It, really, is as simple as that.

Thanks for the explanation. That will suffice for now.

I wish you luck on your game balancing endeavors but also fear that there will always be some aspect of the game that encourages people to try and gain advantage through client modding such as this, no matter how balanced the game mechanics seem to be.

You're saying it is somewhat similar to to not able to make a computer completely hack/virus proof in concept?

Correct you probably are, which is fundamentally one of the best ways we have of discovering flaws and/or bad mechanics. If it weren't for botting the old LP system would probably still be in there, sucking all the while but with no one there to point it out to us.

... except maybe Jackard. He would still know.

As much as I love hearthing/fast travel, I say just take it the hell out like you guys did wall jump stones. probably take as much or less time than that 10 second hearthing timers.
