If you don't mind, may I inquire as to why? :)

The client (and of course, all custom clients based on it, such as Gilbertus -- not just your default client) run rather horribly on my crappy-spec'd laptop.

But basically, what happens is out of nowhere, the Java process will just lock up for a period of 20 seconds up to 2-3 whole minutes or so and I can't interact with H&H at all, often resulting in me being disconnected or having to kill the Java process and start it up again. And depending on how Java feels that day, this can happen every 5-10 minutes or so  but at the very least, it happens at least once per hour, every day.

I talked to you about this on IRC once but you said there was nothing you could do... I forget what your explanation of it was.

1 GB RAM on Vista = :(

Somehow, this has never happened during serious PvP. If I got murdered because of Java freezing up then I would be very ragey indeed!

Hm, why won`t you just switch to XP then?

I somewhat doubt that's actually Java's fault, though. ;)

Ubuntu, in fact; but it may turn out he has a life so it won`t work for him.

The performance problems with existing client is not in Java. PERIOD.
The root cause of a poor performance is how a 2D renderer is written. You can see great performance drop in jungles (where's there's lots of sprites). If you hide terrain (like ark.su client does), you will immediately get performance boost. There's direct correlation between number of sprites on the screen and CPU load (BTW at the end of W2 performance was even worse).
And yes, Java was good choice - I don't like to run VM Ware Player on my unix machine to play games. (BTW Flash would be probably good choice as well).

Yeah, rendering speed is atrocious, I get like .5 FPS in jungle. If you can't improve the rendering itself, could you at least optimize the sprites a bit, so there's less objects to render?

Well, regardless of what the actual problem is, somebody make a client that isn't a piece of shit already.

Status report, OP.

I like hiding stuff, hiding crops can be very useful as a farmer.

Yeah, I do that too, but jungle doesn't get hidden IIRC.
