At least 2-3 died cause of client crashes and/or lag, so yea, it sux. It would be so nice if you can enjoy such battles which rarely occur in a nice non-laggy enviroment.

The biggest problem that I've ran across is that when there is incentive for those battles, you just don't have enough men to actually pull it off, or be impressive when doing so.

No, there is no incentive. I have controlled bigger armies than this on a daily base in w5 and there simply never was anybody willing to stand up to this, because why would they? Vaults are all you need.
