If there really is no scent of murder then it could it be very high quailty leeches?

You guys are missing the fact that his equipment is missing but he's still wearing a backpack. That right there tell you he was robbed, and also likely beaten and killed.

Or maybe he didn't fully log out starved to death and his friend saved his gear sounds like a typical accident to me.
