It's a rather annoying bug yes, but after your first time you figure out which way not to jump out.

It's never happened to me, i dont think i'd get in someone
else's boat though, i'd only accept driver in combat, if they
want to fight i think bell should have kept it on land. Not
his fault of course, bugs are BS, sucks, but happens

Choosing to not take advantage of them is all about the
honor system. Alt spam is highly dishonorable in my eyes =o
