Little late to the party, but yes! It is the very very first thing to do. Jeez when I have Q70 clay I don't leave it basically unprotected for weeks. It is not really harder to build a brickwall than to build a palisade anyway. I never have built a single palisade in this game at the place where my town was supposed to be. Why? Read Avus guide that is why.
This picture of people having large chests, but no brickwall hurts my eyes. That is noobdom to the max.
