When I hermitted, I'd have more than willingly paid tribute to the local overlord if it meant protection and justice for crimes committed. Alas, I feel it would likely be a Faustian bargain as the "overlord" would rather pillage all small villages than protect his or her fiefdom. (Including the ones the "overlord" is supposed to taking tribute from by using alts and some social engineering or just flat out the one that is supposed be the protector.) In the end, those enemies this "overlord" made would end up running over my village, too, because I was supporting him, willingly or otherwise, and according to the politics of the land, I must be destroyed, too, for said support.
