If it's got a palisade, it's not even close to a vault.

What qualifies a location as a vault? One thing: Can a ram be brought to the wall? If yes, then it's not a vault. The only thing that can stop a ram from being brought to a wall is a statue. Anything else is either destroyable or has to be placed far enough apart that there should be room for a ram. (I believe you can get a ram in between banners.)

edit: ok, a village idol will also block a ram from being brought up to a wall. I can't think of anything else at the moment.

A hearth vault is a heavily protected location where one stores his hearth fire.

An illegal hearth vault makes rams impossible.
Of another era.

All vaults are illegal, otherwise it's nothing more than a brickwalled village. Guess you could say all of Ainran and Dis are a vault because they're a heavily protected location where members keep their hearthfires.

Not to derail an otherwise useful thread, but when was the last time one of the major villages was broken into via a ram? There's been quite a few raids via bug abuse and social engineering, but I can't recall a one of this world or last where rams were used to break in. I'll admit that I don't track these things like some of the people around here, so it's quite likely I might have missed it.

Either way, again, I point out, what is the effective difference between a "vault" and a normal, well patrolled brickwalled village? None, except you have exactly one point of attack for a vault as well as a small enough size so you can see any rams at or near the walls, thus eliminating the need to actually patrol anything. (As a note, I've seen smaller villages with brick walls in the open completely surrounded by statues. It was enough area for a few people and their alts with a two beehive farm, though, and not just camp out waiting on scents to expire.)

Eh... it's the internet. You can't actually apply things like logic to what people come up with. The label is what it is. I think it needs to be changed, but whatever.

The difference is that vaults are dirt cheap, so you can make a dozen of them and switch as needed. So yeah, they make you immune to enclosed rams as well.

Well, you don't really need multiple if you make an illegal one, but those are a fairly recent development. And there's a chance (albeit astronomically small) that it will be nuked by the devs. Multiple legal vaults don't have that problem, and they're almost as good for keeping you alive.

I would say any thing with a brick wall is a vault, before vaults used to be places that would just take hours to bash into.
Since you can no longer bash, they are all vaults.

This. I mean really, it's not like you're going to get into a big town via ram. Between statues, alts and counter rams, you won't get anywhere. And even if you do, better start ramming one of the 20 enclosed plots (mini vaults) ;). Granted i wouldn't call um vaults, but i also wouldn't call vaults any safer then villages.

For me (hearth) vault is a place where we see walled hearthfire without industry, farms or livestock.

A vault is what I call my character with 56 inventory slot for absolute security. No ram can access ut and it's totally legal.

That being said the only vault I've seen are the easy ones, not that you need anything fuurther for most cases unless you want a caterpillar style for major factions.
