***Diary of Yolan, Founder of Brodgar***

Entry the Fifth

-------

I rubbed my sleepy eyes, looked out my window, and a bear was loping down the street chasing several screaming Brodgarians. They are still picking up limbs here and there. As usual, today brought tidings both glad and grim. Brodgar now has a village idol. The lawspeaker's name appears to be Satan of all things. Kind of appropriate I guess. The bad news is that Loc is dead, one of the first settlers to come here and a kind soul. Apparently killed at home by a random murderer from out of town for no reason to speak of. The world is a dangerous place. I have heard tales from people arriving from north, east and west. Tales of whole towns slaughtered for sport. One day they are peacefully farming, mining and hunting, the next day not a soul is alive. Small wonder that Brodgar has no end of willing immigrants. As dangerous as it is there is some small safety in numbers, like a school of fish. So long as we are only attacked by lone murderers and not an entire army, we might hope to survive. In other news I received a fine straw hat and bone saw as a present from out of town. Apparently Brodgar is increasingly known of by more advanced settlements. If only we could count on some kind of protection from them. Also, the stranger I found in my bed yesterday is still there. I tried unsuccessfully to wake him up, but I think he's had too much to drink. I've had to make another bough bed.
