Don't trsut anyone from odditown

Postby Kaios » Sat Dec 03, 2011 12:05 am

Before I begin, I would like to clarify that this story will not have screenshots, at least not from me. It is not epic, nor is it filled with amazing battles and tales of survival. It is merely an unfortunate story of betrayal that I hope everyone can appreciate and take to heart that this is probably the worst type of griefing that can ever manifest its self within this game. Also note that the title is purely for comedy purposes and has no actual relation with this post I am making other than a hint of irony.

It had been a great Thursday yesterday. I did not have to work today so I went out to the bar with my friends. We shot some pool and drank beers and talked and danced with some pretty ladies until last call. Eventually after our hour long hike through the city streets we managed to find our way home and went to bed.

Before I passed out I decided I would see if I missed anything in the land of Haven and Hearth so I read through my skype messages. I only browsed through quickly but it didn't take me long to get the gist of things as the bulk of the messages were about how a group of people managed to get inside of our village and summon a few people as well as killing someone at the idol and stealing some items. I would like to just add that the attackers were very kind in that they did not destroy key objects such as kilns and smelters and left some plots/people alone and for that I am grateful.

It did not take me long to figure out what happened as according to someone in a different conversation, the perpetrators were in fact let inside of the village by one of our own. One of our hardest working members, one who I trusted more than a lot of other people in this village and one who of course had access to all of the key alts.

Needless to say, for whatever reasons that I personally cannot comprehend and reasons that don't matter anyways, this person decided to betray the village and the people in it that they started and struggled with since the beginning of this world. I have no ill will towards the group that did the actual killing, because a much larger crime was committed here. It is something I feel a person can never redeem themselves from. They fore-go their moral boundaries for petty or childish reasons and destroy something which not only others spent time on but their self as well.

Now because of this, all of our crossroads and gates are of course completely compromised. Whether or not the traitor gave up the keys, or grabbed some signs is still unknown to me. Even then regardless of what this person might say it can never be known for sure if these things are compromised or not until they are destroyed and rebuilt or another attack happens.

You may have noticed I did not include any names in this, not the traitor or the attackers. It is not my place to belittle their reputations (or add to it) but if they choose to post, or someone else chooses to reveal them than that is just what happens.

I am now unsure of what to do. Some people speak of quitting, others of revenge, and the rest are just as clueless as I am on what should happen next. We obviously have to deal with our internal gate and crossroad problems before anything, but I fear some may not have the resolve to deal with the shit that comes from this and may instead just say "fuck it" and do something else. I have been busy with work and other real life things since this world started so I have not been able to play as much as I'd like to which is unfortunate, but I personally won't abandon anyone until there is no one left.

Some of you may be able to relate, but if not I hope you draw from this experience I have written and hope you never have to suffer the same painful sting that comes from the betrayal by someone you thought you could trust. There have been much worse betrayals than this over time however, and I'm sure there will be more to come.

What is scary that this can end up happening to anyone at anytime, sometimes for no unexplainable reason and there are a lot of reasons as well. Greed, revenge, bitterness, apathy, spontaneous decision, whim, curiosity, discontent, and even well intent. In most of these cases, loyalty takes a back seat.

It has happened to pretty much the majority of the major factions so far as well as a large amount of minor factions throughout history as well.

It's true, people commit betrayal over nothing at all, all too often. There is no real way to absolutely prevent this and it's sad to see it happen but I suppose that's the fun in luck as well?

Then again, if this were the act of say, the IA, then that would actually have been an incredibly calculated move and rather interesting to observe.

Interesting read. I'm sorry to hear this happen, Kaios.

Your town got betrayed twice this world and to the same people. I hate backstabbers and betrayal is the worst of sins but even you have to figure something is veeery wrong with your town if it gets betrayed twice once by someone with full security access and a very hard worker as you said. You have to look in and figure out who fucked up and everything points at very bad management.

a man need only strike another to make him evil."
