tl;dr I took over some abandoned place and was killed while fixing it up. I'd love to know why so I can possibly resolve it.
Two weeks ago during my travels, I happened upon a small brickwall. The gates were open, there were crossroads but no idol, and half the cornerposts weren't even sealed. A couple dozen skeletons were strewn about, but I didn't see a single scent. I assumed the battle occurred long ago, but I might have been wrong considering I only had 3k per*exp.
Two thoughts have been bouncing around in my head ever since I returned to the game recently. a) When I joined Narfell mid-w5 it really opened my eyes to how enjoyable trading can be. b) I never got to experience these marketplace towns that existed in w3 because I haven't been around that long. I decided I wanted to start my own marketplace-type town, but due to the risks in the current system/world and the low level of my stats, I better stick to selling newbie tools/gear. I can give access to hermits in the area. When the inevitable raid happens, I can bounce back quickly.
Thursday I used trespassing to investigate all the houses, but all the cupboards were empty save for some q8 fox meat and some wheat seeds. Stuff like that. Obviously the place had already been picked clean by scavengers over the months. No signs of life at all. I built an idol and left a runestone near the farmhouse reading "Hey if you're actively playing give me a message on the forums. ~Phaen"
Each day since then, I've done a little bit more to fix up and secure the place: destroying hearthfires, removing&rebuilding crossroads (they all had names in other languages - I wanted to name it to my liking), collecting all the skeletons into a little graveyard, repairing the decayed sections of brickwall, building a new gate around the old one using unsealed cornerposts, and sealing any cornerposts that weren't needed. Blahblahblah. I managed all of this without dropping any scents except trespassing. In fact, I can't remember ever leaving any summonable scents this world.
Sunday night somebody used vandalism to break through my weak little temporary signpost barrier, but they didn't take anything except a few crops from the farm. I didn't bother tracking them.
Monday one of my neighbors messaged me with a tale of his death. I kinned his descendant and helped him find his old house (not sure how he lost it) but I was appalled at how unsecured it was (no pclaim, no wall). I offered to let him stay at the place I was fixing up for a few days and he offered to help me secure it. We had a grand old time making bricks together.
Tuesday - This was the day we built the new gate. After that, we just had to build an initial cornerpost to seal up the last hole in the brickwall. While we waited for it to dry, I made a mid-q sling for my new friend and showed him how to hunt from a boat. We were inside roasting meat from our kills when a person in a bearcape greeted my carpentry alt from outside the walls. He asked whether I spoke English and whether I owned the village. I tried to explain that I found the place and plan on fixing it up. When my main and my new friend approached the wall, I think it scared him away because he immediately left before we could chat further or even kin him.
So we go on another hunting trip. While my friend slinged a fox, I began sailing north looking for more animals. Someone in a bearcape was sailing south towards me, but as soon as he saw me he immediately pulled a 180 and left my screen. I figured it was the same guy and frankly it creeped me out, so I turned around to look for animals in the southern direction instead. It wasn't long before I was aggro'd by two guys (dragon helm and bearcape) in a boat traveling north. I pulled a 180 and the cue my first boat chase.
We had a little conversation during it - they asked me if I was from Winterfell and I answered "no" because I am ex-Winterfell. I asked where they're from. When they answered "Winterfell," I naively believed them and immediately stopped running.

After that, I logged on my carpenter alt to see if they were inside the place I was fixing up. I didn't really care about his death, though, because he only had like 20 carp. He froze in a similar fashion to the way my main froze. In fact, any character I logged onto immediately froze at that point, so to fix it I installed a fresh copy of Ender's. I dunno what's up with that

Anyway, I made this thread because I'd like to get in contact with whoever invited those lovely chaps with the dragon helms. I'm not into the whole "revenge" path, I'm just interested whether I wronged anyone. Did I destroy a hearthfire of an active player? Did I destroy an outdoor crossroad that somebody normally uses? If I indeed wronged anyone I'd like to make it right

But maybe it was just another boring random killing. /yawn

(original post before the edit)
I can post the story too if people ask, but it's not very interesting.
You asked me if I was from Winterfell. After I said no, you fibbed and said you were from Winterfell.
I'm a little too trusting, so I believed you and stopped to chat

It saddened to me that I lagged out right when you caught up to me

I wanted to at least try a punch or two.
