Need someone to take care of a thief

Postby TheMitchster » Sat Apr 28, 2012 10:35 pm

Some guy took some hardened leather from our village. He left a high quality scent so tracking him will probably be an easy job and it would be much appreciated if you could do this for us. PM me for details.

EDIT: Read the post below please and sorry for not including much detail

Hi!

I'm the owner of the "village" (it's more of a personal claim at this point), and I saw that my friend didn't provide much detail in his post, so I'm just going to follow up here. Sorry - my fault - I was in a rush to get to an appointment, but I got there early, so I'm just posting this in waiting room so you know what's going on better. :)

Basically, we're just a starting up village with four members. We're pretty new, less than a week in, so we haven't been able to get a wall up yet. We took over a loooong abandoned settlement (everything but the gate for the palisade had rotted, and no personal claim), but it's pretty big in the way the land is parceled out, so we decided the best course of action was to gather up the necessary resources before we actually put the wall up because we've heard stories of griefers doing some nasty things to cornerposts while unsuspecting wall-builders waited if they took too long to put up the wall.

So just today, I realized a bunch of stuff we needed for the wall (as well as other items we were saving up to expand) were gone from our cupboards. I asked my fellow villagers if they took it, but they didn't, so I turned on tracking and realized there were a bunch of theft and tresspassing scents all over the claim. Tracking them, I found that yes, indeed, it wasn't just one of my villagers doing something by accident or whatever, as they came from east of our settlement and none of us had left the general area since we logged off yesterday. However, chances are that whomever stole from us came from very close by, because we're located in a river system that only connects a small part of the map, and is very difficult to access by land from elsewhere.

Basically, we aren't that concerned about the loss of items. It's not a big deal, since they were fairly low Q and not that hard to build up again. However, where we're concerned is that the perpentrator might come back again. As you can see, we highly suspect the motive of the thief to be just griefing new players - the stuff they took set us back significantly, but wouldn't have been of much value to them at all. So, referring back the story above about the village walls, this leaves us in a hard spot, since the thief knows where we are, is likely close, and thus is likely to come back:

- Should we risk building a corner post, and having our village walls wrecked? We don't have that many resources to spare to the creation of a battering ram.
- Or should we continue to gather resources... And get them stolen again?

Basically, we're frustrated. What we'd really like is for someone to come over and be our hero in this difficult situation - the easiest way is just to track the perpentrator down for us and make sure they won't do it again, at least not until we have the essentials going. We can't do it ourselves because we're just so new: while I do have Ranging, none of us have the pre-requisite skills to do anything other than give them a harsh talking to - which I would do, but the issue is that they seem to have the reverse hours as we do (they're offline when we're online and vice versa), so I can't even do that.

I hope one of you will be kind enough to help - if not, no big deal, we can still continue on our way. But right now, we're just really disappointed that our progress has gone to waste, and while we're totally okay with letting it be a sunken cost, we're trying to think of our options to prevent it from happening again, and this was one of the things that we wanted to try. There's not much we can provide at the moment in terms of rewards (well, we can point you towards a 35-40ish Q Clay Node), but you'll have our eternal gratitude, plus we'll be able to strike up friendly relations with you for when we're established.

Leave them a runestone that says "get the hell off my law"

And if that doesn't work, get someone to stay up all night on an alt like a nolifer to see if the thief has okay combat skills.
Not acting like a faggot anymore.

#1 Decide whether to relocate or not. The thief knows where you are and you're correct he could easily strike again. A better location is one away from high-traffic areas like rivers.

#2 Vault all your valuables until you get a wall. What this means is: make an alternate character for the sole purpose of putting materials into its inventory and logging it off. I know it's a lame way to protect items but its one way to be sure that your most important things wont be stolen. If I were you I would vault the rope, leather, and boneglue requirements for your palisade until you have enough to begin building. The thief will no longer be able to slow down your wallmaking progress if you do this.

#3 Gather logs for your wall and dispense them along the perimeter. Each wall section takes 3 blocks and each log has 12 blocks, so place 1 log every 4 tiles around your entire perimeter in preparation to make the building phase of the wall go as quickly as possible

#4 When you build the palisade cornerpost(s), be mindful of the 12hr cooldown and make sure you will be online when it dries to build the wall. Building a cornerpost at 4pm and then sleeping 11pm~7am is an example of bad planning (giving griefers a 3 hour window to fuck up your cornerpost). In addition, build the entire wall in one go. If you've done the preparation in #3 then the actual building phase should be only a few hours long.

Best of luck <3

Thank you for the helpful advice!

And also thanks to all of the other helpful people who prefer to lurk in the shadows.

<3 I think the situation is more or less resolved.

I have question to that criminal, if he is even reading this topic though;
Why the fucking god you left your hearth fire on firing and summoning range in your brick wall? You really wanted to die? Is house really so hard to build? Also, there was a spot if I remember right, where I couldn't see...
(yes, it was outside, place just next to river etc.)
and apologies to A.D if this stupid guy was your man.

And shirai.. I still miss that merch and monocle... :(
