Under attack - Help help!

Postby Granny » Tue Sep 25, 2012 9:41 pm

Hello there ladies and gents!

My newbie settlement is attacked by someone who charged in tonight. I had placed a hearth fire in the opening of the palisade ( the place was abandoned and I figured I could move in) I was on my farmer at the time, and ran in a house and logged out. She is probably dead already poor thing, and it should be loads of recent scents for those that have the skills. There isnt much to steal, as my few posessions are tucked away on alts.

Lesson learned - one can jump the heart fire? Or maybe one with str enough to bash palisade, I didnt get a chance to look. Anyone care to revenge my poor farmer, and quite possibly the loss of my newfound settlement?

My lovely and repaired palisade is destroyed on the western wall. Looks like one of those palibashers I have read about then. And now when I had at long last finally understood how I could get crops higher. Been playing on and off for a few months, but very casually so development takes a loong time. Reason also why I did not join a village. The requirement of playing 3 hours or more is a tad too much for me.

Still hoping for some fine avengers, but it looks slim.

I might be willing to help. And by that I mean track the perp.. beyond that will depend on what i find.

What I'd need.
1: one of your hearth secerts to spawn a new alt.
2: scents that you collect. (5 to 10 would be ideal)
3: for you to break the alts Hearth fire so i can oath him back to my village.

Thanks a lot DrakenRahl! , but not sure I can comply on all.

Number 1 I can do, and 3 as well - if my farmer is alive. She is still a choice on my logging screen, I hope that means something. She is the one with the personal claim, She has enough str I think to destroy one of those.

2 - I really don`t know how to. I think I have bought the skill, but I do not understand the mechanics of it. Will there be scents visible to my character? How long do the scents last? Which ones should I pick up? The vandalism ones right?

Thanks to DrakenRahl for the offer of tracking. I just found out I can do that myself. Well, in theory at least. I have been collecting scents and I have to read up on how to go from there :)

The good news is that my farmer was knocked out, not killed. So i can still enjoy that aspect of the game. As I mentioned there wasn`t really all that much to take, but the perp seems to have found something, as there was reek of theft on some things. Blueberries, clay, bone. All in all, it could have been worse as the first experience with that part of the game.

But, how do one protect oneself from that with no brickwall really? It seems the balance is rather skewed. Is it only because it`s late in the world, or is it like this early on as well ?

You can not protect your items from your palisade being bashed, there are to many palibashers at this time of the world.
Even having a brickwall, and patrolling it each 12 hours, is not safe because there are bugs to bash and jump it, they have been posted many times, so with a little search you can find out about this bug abuse.
Is not that I am saying you dont need them, you do, they make the casual griefer go away searching for a more easy target. Is just that there is no safety here, only some degrees of protection.

If you get strong alliances, that is good. Many thiefs do not dare attack some villages because of the fear of retaliation, but at this time of the world and with this awfull lag a lot of strong villages are abandoned, and if you are new to the game is probable you dont know strong players who actually play.

If you get to live in a village, well that is a risk too, villages allways have enemies and will be attacked. Maybe less than if you live alone? IDK, I think I have been griefed more severely living in a village than by myself. When I lived alone the griefing was casual, not with the anger of an enemy that demolishes houses and kills cattle beside stealing and destroying all they find.

One thing you can do is create an alternate account and save your valuables in alts toons inventory. I equip them with backpacks and travellers sacks. I can not still place on them merchant robes that would enlarge their inventory to an acceptable size, but they do ok for now. Ofc this does not work for liftable objects.

What I have found out, in the many times I have been griefed, is that people that attacked me did not bother to destroy construction signs, so whatever I placed into them allways was there after a raid, so now I use them a lot. IDK if this was just a bit of good luck in all the bad of the griefing or just a coincidence.

If you are going to make a brick wall, it would be much more safe to build your new base in an island, choosing one where you can see the shore from your brickwall. Ram bugs are not used in islands because there is not enough space to hide anything, adding patrolling to discover and destroy possible rams would make it very hard to be rammed.
The ideal base would be one with an antisnipers bwall at least 30 tiles from your main working area. This working area would be sorrounded by a smaller inner second bwall (both walls closed by themselves, not using clifs), this would give you some security.
What some players do is to place objects or construction signs in the 3 tiles next to the wall to prevent wall jumping (IDK if it really works).
This added to personal and village claims way over the outerwall to be able to collect scents when someone intends to bug ram you and to prevent someone placing a crossroad right next to your wall (to jump inside) might give you some security.
The ultimate security device used is a chieftain statue wall in the outer side of your brickwall, but chieftain statues are very expensive, so only rich players can make them. There is a post where it is said that banners work the same as statues, I have not seen banner walls, maybe because they require upkeep and statues dont? IDK.

Good luck Granny!, I wish you enjoy the game :D , it is a beautiful game only waiting for some keep up that hopefully we will get after Salem gets to be open beta.

This game doesn't like new people.

Alt vault your steel/iron. Build a bunch of kilns and start making bricks. Create a Village Idol also.

Thanks Cranny for the info. Very much appreciated. I have still lots to learn. A brick wall is far away atm - I haven`t discovered metal yet. The blueberries that the thief stole was my first poor attempt at gathering something I could perhaps trade for that. Seeing someone not intent of stealing and killing would be nice as well:) I am also keeping what else I can find of small precious things. Yes - on an army of alts. No travelling sacks yet.

I have read the trading guide and it seems my current choice is to use the scent/summon method since I do not have a village up. Still working on the LP for that on alts. I am not even sure if I would want one village though, as that seems to be a big red flag as you mention for the raiders out there.

Thing I am contemplating now is whether I should move or not. Many on the forums have moved and resettled in a similar situation. I don`t really see the point in moving atm. The same will happen wherever really, so why leave right? Only thing is though that the layout isn`t really optimal, and I haven`t done that one myself.

I started playing this game initially because I was curious about Salem but didn`t get a beta invite. So I thought I would check out how the two guys in Seatribe thought and created worlds. Why would I invest time and money into a game that had perma-death etc. ? Finally got my beta key - but I ended up getting nausea from Salem, got knocked out from crickets and lack of yellow bile too far away from Boston. I find H&H a far better game, and the quality system is addictive. I am still not really sure whether I really belong in this kind of game (perma-death), but in this setting your accomplishments have a greater value than if I would play farmville.
