Looking for fellow hermits

Postby Ogrim » Tue May 01, 2012 4:51 pm

I'm sure this has been tried in the past but I'm curious if there are other hermits out there that would like to band together into a village? This 'Village for Hermits' would only be a place of trade and production. You'd keep your original hermitage for farming, raising animals, etc. A hermit's membership in the village would allow him to 'port' over to the village from his hermitage, and then he could 'port' back to his hearthfire at home.

I'm currently clearing out an area in my mine. This village would be completely brick-walled with no gate, mine or access in or out save for the idol. My plan would be to have at least one q95+ oven, ore smelter, finery forge, steel crucible and alloying crucible. I'd also attempt to get the highest q kiln possible... but high q kilns are tough. Other high q items like looms and cauldrons would be nice too.

Membership would give you access to trade and some nice production facilities. No hearthfires would be allowed in this village and I'm even considering keeping storage at a minimum. No need to make this place a target, raiders can take the trouble of hitting us at our home hermitages if they so desire. Plus this keeps policing against theft to a minimum as well.

So... having given this some more thought, here's what I propose:

A village that acts as a hub of trade for established and successful hermits.

I will set up a village idol in a completely isolated layer of my mine. The area will be brick-walled without a gate, so the only access will be via idol, even my mine won't allow access into or out of the village.

The village area will have a common area surrounding the idol, as well as a limited number of personal areas sectioned off (large enough to build a mansion) for private use. Personal claims may be walled as long as I get a copy of the key. I'll have a battering ram secured in my area should someone become non-compliant with this policy. Absolutely NO hearthfires will be allowed in this village (we're not a hide-out for thieves).

In return for access to this village, a weekly dues will be agreed upon between the hermit and myself. (This will be a small token payment for the convenience of trade, not meant to be a burden.) This system of dues will be mostly on the honor system. If a pattern of non-compliance comes to my attention, you can expect a short conversation in an effort to reconcile the issue followed by ejection from town if there is a refusal of dues.

In return for a private claim in this village, a slightly higher level of dues will be agreed upon. In addition, should dues be refused at some point you can expect a notice of ejection with a fair period of time to clear out your belongings. You won't find summary confiscation of goods or property under any circumstances short of theft/assault/murder.

As you can see this is a rough draft without detailed filled in. I'm willing to do the work up front to establish this community in the hopes of increasing the opportunities for those of you who prefer the hermit's life. I'm also aware of the potential risks of building something like this, so security is a primary concern.

Again, at least at the start, this is not something designed for beginning hermits but successful ones. Hermits who qualify should expect a friendly visit to their hermitage to verify their capabilities. If you'd like to know the criteria... well, I don't have any at the moment. If you think you've got something to offer other hermits, then you probably qualify.

I will not build this unless there is at least 4-5 interested parties of sufficient capability. Should there be correct interest, our oaths will be recorded on paper in game so that there will be no confusion as to how our little enterprise operates.

Best of luck to you with this idea, I like it =)

Suggestion: use the dues to purchase clay/bricks for public-access kilns/smelters/ovens

I think this is a great idea. Seriously... a public workspace that gives you access to high q kilns, ovens, smelters...etc. Any village able to source high q clay and/or bricks would get an influx of materials and goods from the combined effort of several hermits. I would likely sub-sect the village, since these items would be prime targets for a griefer or disgruntled hermit and keep them in a separate private claim and palisade with controlled access.

Consider this idea formally adopted.

I am how-ever discouraged from the lack of hermits interested in this cooperative effort. Perhaps they do not frequent the forums as often as the village folk do. A shame.

I have a huge place sectioned off with a palisade, with plots marked off inside.. if you want to team together on this. :)

Yeah, I saw the post. The problem is it's above ground, thus easy for griefers and raiders to cause trouble. My thought is to keep it rather small and very secret by operating several layers below the surface. The hermits would all still keep their hermitages, they would just gain the ability to 'port' to this village for trade and use of production facilities.

Similar ideas...very different execution.

I would need to farm though, However if we get a crossroad to each other, then the trading posts can be put together. :)

Yes, my 'Village for Hermits' would only be a place of trade and production. You'd keep your original hermitage for farming, raising animals, etc. A hermit's membership in the village would allow him to 'port' over to the village from his hermitage, and then he could 'port' back to his hearthfire at home.

Should you get your village started and enough hermits become interested in my concept to start this trade village as well then we can talk about linking up a crossroads.

Again, I'd be seriously concerned about the defense of an above ground village filled with hermits. Hermits aren't notorious for sticking their necks out for one another... most of us just want to work and be left alone, the concerns of others often take a back seat to our own survival.
