This has been done before in a similar manner, but successfully. You know why? Because they kept their existence a secret and that is the most important rule you need for such a project.

Also people need to understand that for a town a palisade is worth about the same as a fence. Build brickwalls.

Maybe you can visit random villages with the caravan and have them as your hosts for a week or so. In exchange for use of their infrastructure you can work for them, like hunt alot of animals for your hosts and fish or mine for them etc.

there is a reason i have a brickwall, and its not to welcome guests into a save area, its to keep anything i dont know well out. so im not sure how welcome it would be, specially since the caravan would be fairly easy for a griefer to get into.
