Then I would have to close the idol off, leaving me with even smaller space.

As for attention magnet - I dunno. I gather there are far more interesting places to spend time on than a hermit place. But, I have been wrong before. Some raiders destroyed my first base.

The most challenging part for me I find as a hermit is to produce enough food for my army of alts. Especially after the lag is gone, since they tend to do more and get hungry faster. I have a table set up, but often I can`t use it as I can`t produce fast enough. Using it consumes more. How do you lot do it? Produce larger batches perhaps? I only have one oven, so not exactly industrial set up.

Well, I only have my main and two alts in the village. My miner consumes the most food and quite rapidly, understandably, and I also only have one oven. I have set day for set chores, lol, sort of like rl, harvest day, livestock day, crafting day, cooking day, etc, so, yes, produce larger batches. I tend to have the opposite problem of too much food, lol, I end up putting it outside in baskets for passers by.

How many alts do you have?

I also tend to stockpile food but I only have 2 alts. My main is focused on mining (Thus grinds FEPs) and hunting (dangerous I know). One of my alts focuses on farming/crafting and the last is a throw away for trading and doing menial tasks in dangerous territory.

Almost the same, except my main is my farmer/crafter - one alt, miner/hunter - the other, forager/explorer/menial jobs guy, lol.

I trade with my main - - but that is because I only trade with people I trust and they come to me, I can't run two clients. :)

Nearly done with my wall now. 1 wrought left to go for the last cornerpost. Brick for the gate is set aside and my steel is half done (I hate making steel too...) so soon to join the ranks of the Masons.

Next it will be time to specialize. I'm going to focus on churning out some of the highest quality trees and crops. What do you folks focus on?

Set days for different chores sounds smart. It`s a bit weird spending time in a virtual world doing chores, but most of my time is spent doing that as well.

I have "mains" as in plural. Characters I start for a task, then train up doing other things. Then suddenly I play them a lot. While none of my characters gets fully developed doing that, it makes me less vulnerable should I loose one. I only have one miner though. She was a pain training up, and the reason my food supplies are running low. And then theres all these packrats. I do not store much of value in the village, even behind a b-wall.

@Ogrim
I can`t say I focus on anything in particular. I just try to play as varied as I can with the time I have. Getting tree quality up is a long term goal though.

Lol, I know, it is odd but there's so much to do when you hermit. I used to love farming but now I loathe it, lol, it's like housework!
I love to forage and explore, so I find I get time every day to go off in the world if I stick to some kind of routine and don't let it all build up.

Yeah, miners are greedy, lol.

I do the same, and tree q and silk are my long term goals - problem being work and forgetting I have stuff on the tables, lol, i've had to re-start silk production 3 times from scratch, so it's not very impressive atm. :(

Nice to meet fellow hermits!

Personally, I don't have a brick wall atm, but got a mine and a full set of smelters down there. They were built long before, and since it was nearly impossible to play with such a horrible lags, I gave it up. Now, I think, it's a good time to start again.

In the early-mid 2012, I used to have a farming plot also, with a pretty good developed char. I thought it was OK to scavenge in abandoned plots, taking some stuff from people who play no more. Little did I cared about that, but then I ran over a wrong guy's place. After awhile my char was summoned and killed, the gates were also bashed down and my small stock of wrought iron was taken. I didn't played much since then; it was the time when the Great Lag came, leaving no other choices but to quit.
After a winter idleness, in a matter of recent days, I came back, only to find some newb sleeping inside my half-crumbled log cabin. Screw it.

So now I'm facing one question: what do I do now? Shall I go searching for better spot, or remain in my small, albeit walled by palisade mine?
Do I have to restore my farming production around it, or probably stick to hunting and gathering?

Paul,

Interesting dilemma... likely one most hermits have or will face at one time or another. In this game things get destroyed, you get raided, sometimes you die. The question is do you rebuild? Well the game is always about building, so I guess your question is whether to rebuild where you are or start somewhere fresh.

To answer the question, analyze what you have at that site. Do you have access to some good nodes? Did enough of your original build survive for you to use it? Have you sunk time into producing some high quality production pieces (kilns, smelters, etc)? If not then you might want to consider roaming about and finding some good nodes before restarting your settlement.

The other question you have to ask yourself is do you enjoy the hermit life or do you want to be a villager.

Obviously, we can't answer these for you. If you decide to rebuild, you might find some helpful folks willing to donate materials to start you off right on this thread.

Good luck!

Hi Paul,

Ogrim has addressed the majority of your questions so i'll just add with regard to the farming.

Personally I would always have a farming structure of sorts, mainly for better quality food but also for the curio's that can be crafted around having a farm - i'm including a chicken coop and beehive in what I would call a farming infrastructure. It doesn't have to be large, as a hermit you don't need acres of land. My main farming area consists of four 5x5 plots for all the produce, with a 6x6 plot for wine making. As I also have livestock, I have a seperate area with larger plots for feeding them and producing corn.

If you have an idol, or when you have one, I would be happy to provide you with starter seeds for all your crops should you decide to farm.

Good luck! :)
