Why join a village

Postby Arcanist » Fri Mar 23, 2012 12:40 pm

So, I'm pretty new to this game, and living alone is lonely, but it seems that one person can get all the necesities required to play, and even that this is what the game is based around. I was wondering, what are the positives/negatives of living in a village? minus the whole getting ganked thing.

Because while it's very possible to do it all with alts, it's also very time consuming. You either need to have like, no life or accept that you will be mediocre at most things. And eff building a brickwall by yourself. I don't care to experience that again. It was quite painful. At this stage of the game having just a palisade is only moderately better than having no wall at all.

- living alone is lonely & dull (for some people doing everything yourself is more fun however)
- economies of scale; simple example; brickwall. Compared to 1 person, it will take a village much less time to build a brickwall, since everyone can be grinding bricks at the same time. Another one: collecting curios to, say, buy hq clay for a kiln, will take a much shorter time for a village of a few people than for a hermit.
- different people in the village can do the tasks they like best (although this can create problems). This is also related to the above. e.g. different people crafting different curios, means you will have more of everything.
- if you get attacked, a village (theoretically!) has a better chance of being able to defend itself / get revenge. Guess you know this already.
- if you want to attack someone its best to bring friends...

low level to mid level development - Loner / Hermit works
higher levels only in village with supporting villagers working hand in hand

at some point it's just too much stuff to do alone

theres a lot of benefits to being in a town, some already noted.

But these are mine:

1. The social aspect. playing with toher people and having someone to talk to whilst ingame makes this fun
2. Learning. especially in a town with experienced players, it is an awesome way to learn the game
3. Security. most towns will have this sorted.
4. Development. you will develop a charachter quickly in a town. the food is better, the curios crafted are better, the equipment u will receive will be better (ofcourse each town differs in these aspects though)

but as i've found with recruiting newbs and hermits, is that they dont really understand the functions of a town. when ure alone, you do everything. when ure in msot towns, this isnt possible. you're generally recruited to take on a specific job/role. if you have issues with doing that, then a town isnt really for you. if you're asked to a be a hunter, yet u decide ure more interested in silk production, or doing other jobs around village which are msot likely done someone else, then it doesnt work.

Each village will be different in the way they function, and how developed they are. When you're applying to a town, find out how this village works and how you'd fit in and whats expected from you, so you dont waste their time and they dont waste yours.

Everyone is different and it also depends on what you wish to get out of the game.

In two worlds now i've been a hermit, it works fine for me, yes there's a lot more work to be done and yes, it takes longer to raise quality but i like the fact that all my achievements are my own and i'm my own boss. I get to experience all the game has to offer and not just certain aspects of it. As Eemerald pointed out, most villages will want you to excell at one particular job and the freedom to do as you please and raise all your stats as you see fit isn't always available to you.

As for the social aspect - i have a healthy kin list with plenty of ppl to talk to and visit and help out when needed, i wouldn't want them around me all the time (no offence to those in question :D ) as i like to do my own thing and not always in the mood for talking, as thats what i do all day, every day in rl, lol. But its nice to know that they are there.

@ Paislee - i'm with you on building the b/wall tho, never, ever, again!

this is true. some people fit really well into towns. and some want to control and do everything (me to a certain extent) where they dont fit well in some types of towns.

the reason towns expect people to specialize is so that their skills and stats are at a high level quickly, instead of waiting for someone to icnrease them all to a high level. if i recruit a farmer, and need them to have 200 farming as a target, i'm not going to wait a month for them to reach this level because theyre icnreasing every other one, when it could be achieved in 2 weeks. thats not to say that they shouldnt once theyve got to that stage, and its generally easier to get the lp to raise skills easily and quickly. most of the older players all have good stats in everything, and apart from slider change, can pretty much do any job easily and to a high level. but we all started by splitting up jobs, so we werent all increasing the same thing which would have been pointless.

pros of the villages that don't suck

camaraderie
lighter workload and/or faster progress
safety

cons of nearly every village:

expectation of recognition of authority
concept of shared responsibility
diminished or distorted definition of private property
limited decision making power
