Free Masons (H&H Hermits)

Postby Ogrim » Fri Apr 12, 2013 2:17 pm

Hi, my name is Ogrim and I hate making bricks.

I play a hermit in H&H. Though the lifestyle is lonely, I figured this thread could be a way for us to chat with one another and discuss life as a hermit. In addition, I enjoy helping others (especially peaceable folk looking to start a hermitage or a village) and have been known to donate metal tools, fresh bears and medium q seeds.

To help distinguish between where each of us are, please use the following definitions:

A hermit is NOT a village. If you play with more than 1 other person at your location then you are a village. This thread is not for village folk.
A 'Mason' is a hermit that lives behind the safety of a brick wall. Everyone else is just a hermit.

Hello there.

I`m a hermit too. Or a mason as you call it. I hate making bricks as well. Due to RL hermit is the only playstyle I can do I think. sad part is that I have no idea how a village looks from the inside. I probably do a lot of things very awkvard, not having learned it to do it more efficient. I recently found out it was smart to use seed bags when tending to my farm. Doh..

I'm a hermit for about 2,5 years now and I've never used seedbags. Lol, everyone works on their own way I guess.
As for the OP, check your pm :)
Hope you have a great day

I too am a hermit, I have been a part of villages in the past. But I find for the most part villages make people lazy. Also relying on other people is not a good quality.
Early world exploit: Put your hearthfire inside a cave, then hold shift to position a claim right in front of a cave. After 8 hours the claim will be unbreakable. Since your hearthfire is inside the cave, you can still get back inside, and leave, but nobody will be able to enter, effectively making you unraidable for the first 3-7 days. Enjoy

Hey Ogrim,

I'm a hermit and I hate building walls!

I love the hermit lifestyle and there's no need to be lonely, I know all my neighbours and make a point of introducing myself to all newcomers to the area (for safety/harmony reasons as well as to help out, lol). I also have a seperate claim for new players where they can learn the game behind a palli and at least get protection from the wildlife.
The last lot quit during the lag but with the rush of new players now, i'm just in the process of allocating new places.

I've also recently taken over an abandoned claim and have decided to make it into a plot for two players to share and do what they want with it. They won't exactly be villagers, in the sense they won't have access to the rest of the village, but they will be on village grounds, have a b/walled enclosure and help if they need/want it. If this works out successfully, I may make other area's into similar plots, but we'll see how it goes.

Like Granny, my rl commitments would make it difficult to have a full functioning village and tbh I like the peace and quiet of a hermitage. I like things placed and organised a certain way and I think i'd get easily frustrated with villagers, lol, I have a helper atm and i'm constantly re-arranging his chest when he just chucks things in it randomly - i'm sure this would get annoying to villagers after awhile.

With the hermit lifestyle you can grow at your own pace and there is no pressure involved - a perfect end to a stressful rl day! :D

Just noticed - this thread should be in IoB since it isn't a recruiting thread. :)

The thread is for recruiting, just not for village recruiting. I posted this to find a group of others to play with and discuss the hermit lifestyle.

I've been playing (though mostly lurked during the lag fiasco) since the end of 2011. My current hermitage has a Pali and has survived several raids both with rams and Palibashers. I'm 85% done with a brickwall and am mostly just waiting on the 5 steel to finish cooking. I've got a mine 2 levels deep, both of which connect to cave areas that are contested by multiple parties. The area I live isn't friendly but it also isn't OVERLY aggressive either. I've got crops (average q 40-50) and trees (1 @ q 100 and several at q 60+). There is a clay node nearby (q24) and I have a good 5 minute walk to get to a river.

My hope is to find other hermits to trade with. To that end, I'm interested in popping a village idol underground (I don't want the attention magnet of surface level) but I wonder what is the most secure method of doing so? Any of you have village idols up for trade purposes, if so how to you keep it safe?

Sorry, I was confused by this:

I thought you meant just talk via the forum thread - I didn't realise you meant to play with in game as well, until you've just said it now. My apologies. :)

My idol is in the centre of the village and b/walled - if you only trade with reputable traders there's not really much to worry about. I would only trade with non-traders (as in, no trade thread) if they were people I knew or trusted. Obviously as a hermit you are more vunerable should a trade turn ugly. Post reading gives you a pretty good judge of character I find.

Setting up a village idol greatly enhanced my game, but i don`t use it for people coming to me to trade. I have only traded with trusted traders so far, porting to their own trade villages. My village is too small to really be a trade village. Then I would have to close the idol off, leaving me with even smaller space.

As for attention magnet - I dunno. I gather there are far more interesting places to spend time on than a hermit place. But, I have been wrong before. Some raiders destroyed my first base.

The most challenging part for me I find as a hermit is to produce enough food for my army of alts. Especially after the lag is gone, since they tend to do more and get hungry faster. I have a table set up, but often I can`t use it as I can`t produce fast enough. Using it consumes more. How do you lot do it? Produce larger batches perhaps? I only have one oven, so not exactly industrial set up.
