If you emigrate to a new country, you don't impose your cultural beliefs on them: it is your duty to learn about their culture. Common sense.

As for leverage: if you are in a dangerous environment (i.e. whole H&H or any country in the world 200 years ago), you can make sure that either you got leverage against those you "trust", or they have leverage against you. One form of mutual leverage is having a mutual friend that is severely negatively affected if either parties break their commitments.
