this has always been my bible since world 3. some may be outdated, but you should still take a look.
(i cannot say i always followed everything it said, but still.)

good luck onto your next journey!

I read that one too but it applies to villages. We weren't anywhere near being a village, we were just working off a personal claim.

I realize it may seem like us old timers are mobbing you, but don't worry we're just trying to help. For a beginner you did a lot better than average (also a very nice post compared to the usual "I got raided, plz someone kill them" without grammar, spelling or pictures at all). Hell my first fuck up gave away the keys to my place and I was fighting them at my gates while evacuating our little settlement. Thank god I had worked hard at grinding my UA at that point.

Anyway by "not near the river" we mean literally not within minimap sight of said river. If the minimap tile you're living on is loaded when boating through a river, you're too close. And when we say "village" we mean "more than one person living together". Having a vclaim isn't necessary to have something called a village, but it's so useful everyone gets it when they're able to for Xroads and trading.

Once a village is up, being 3 minimaps away from the river is liveable since you're able to teleport to the river through your xroad system. Once you've got those, gates literally never open again except for animals.

You can always think about joining a larger village i know most have Crossroads at this point and Brick Walls so no worries for the time being just because you would have to really piss off a group of people to get raided if they have to go through archer wall, main wall, and Private plot wall. Plus by then the entire village is on and ready to fight....
War does not determine who is right - only who is left.

Joining a village seems tempting from a material safety perspective but is it that much safer for personal safety? Presumeably people have to come out of villages to do business - if they're just self-contained utopias, this game wouldn't have bickering over resources (you do seem to have that, right?).

I mean from my noob perspective personally, I didn't lose anything worth crying over. Things might have turned out differently if we hadn't locked him out and he wound up looting our leather and Itsy Bitsy Spider but he could just as easily have caught us fishing or logging and two-shot us then without ever seeing the palisade. At the end of the day, I didn't feel any particular attachment to the material goods. I just shrugged, made a new toon and spawned elsewhere and did not have to rediscover everything. What seems to hurt most is losing the character and all the numbers on it. How far does joining a large group help in that? I mean if a village gets a great big wall, doesn't that just attract bandits to haunt its outskirts or camp its crossroad spawn points?

Being in a village does wonders for recovery after death, as other people will still have their characters for making high end curios and if the village is worth anything they'll be helping you get back up. With your attitude you shouldn't have trouble finding a good village (choose carefully), hell if I were playing H&H I'd be PMing you with a recruitment offer right now.
