Odds are that the criminal had substantially more Int*Stealth than your tracker has Per*Exp. Your tracker has something around 35 Exploration and 20 Perception but consider that most players are going to be aiming for 100 intelligence, sometimes as much as 125 even without the intent to do ill, since you need intelligence for Attention Limit. That means to match your tracker, the murderer likely only needs 6 or 7 stealth. A dedicated criminal will have much more than that. They could easily have 4x Int*Stealth as you have Per*Exp but my bet is that they have considerably more.

Your best bet to track the scents is to constantly reload the area. Have your tracker enter and exit a nearby house within sight to keep reloading the area to see if they can notice the scents. The bigger the gap, the lower the odds they'll show up. Likewise, if the criminal has substantially better stats than your tracker, you may only be able to get one or two scents total instead of the dozens you'll need to successfully track them down.

Edit: Chances are you'll only find vandalism scents. It sounds like your villagemate was a criminal, which is how he was killed while offline. The killer broke his hearthfire and then summoned him elsewhere with scents to kill him.

Possbily he moved his hf outside of walls and then been tracked? Then the summon place is to be found.

Pro-Tip: Turn on tracking, stand by the crime scene, equip and unequip a dowsing rod over and over again

This will reset the area for things that you can see

If victim is telling the truth an did not move his HF, what if his password was guessed/hacked? Hacker would have simply logged in at HF, destroyed it and then used scent to summon.

While it's a possibility, chances are in a situation with newer players that it was just a decent criminal. There's likely a hole in their defenses that they don't realize or they're using a palisade wall. Beyond that hiding scents from someone with 700 tracking isn't hard.

inb4 someone destroyed this person's hf for lols and now doesnt wanna admit to it

edit: couldnt happen if the area is scentfree. maybe person doesnt wanna admit to moving hf to another place for raiding/hoarding reasons and leaving it there/forgetting to place a new one?
Although I don't fear dying, I still would rather not.

I live there and as soon as I found out what happened I went and looked for my self his hearth was destroyed and there are scents from it, I personally can't track it well and so I have no idea who did it, also there seems to be no wall breaks and I haven't seen any trespassing scents so I have the feeling the person who did it was a member of the village
