Well, it is to me anyway.
It's like going out for the day, lol, a chance to explore, meet new people, collecting stuff is always fun and then the excitement of finding a really good curio.

I understand why the factions use bots, I don't agree with it, but I do get it.
However, if you have bots to collect logs, mine, put things in and out of containers/buildings, forage, farm, etc - what is it YOU actualy do in the game?

From a personal viewpoint, it's like using cheat codes, there is no satisfaction in winning or even playing if you can't do it without using them. I don't particularly care if people use bots, I guess because i'm not competing as such, I dare say i'd care more if I was, but a foraging bot is different, it affects everyone in it's radius and doesn't seem at all fair in that regard.

Why not make bots an integral part of the game? Make it easier for people that dont do programming on a regular basis do make it work.

Because having the game play itself isn't a good game mechanic

Some people just like getting to the end and don't care how hard or easy a thing is. If I were to write a game, I might even consider including "special" options for those that use cheat codes at different times. I love finding Easter eggs in games.

As far as using bots... well, if you have a good bot that can save you your wrist from all the infernal clicking farming needs, I can't blame a single person for using it. I'd use it myself. I love the farming, but after doing even one beehive sized field, my arm is stiff and sore. If I try doing two, I have to get a heating pad and take pills. (I had to quit my job as a baker because I couldn't deal with the pain anymore.)
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

Forging isn't mundane, it's the most basic play aspect of the game. Moving through and evaluating and using your local environment is the epitome of what a player is supposed to do in an open-world survival game.

The main issue here is foraging with a "main" (I use the term loosely since nobody in the high-end powergamer part of the community has one anymore), is that the metric for survivability in the game the past few worlds has been dependent on how much water you lug around with you, which undermines your foraging ability as far as gathering raw resources. So of course I see why people throw up foraging alts or even bots, just for pure gathering. But doing this you lose the other benefits of play while doing foraging; the movement, scouting, and evaluating of the land around you. It also reduces the ability to use new players and deal with local trade and commerce.

But Hearthlands are serious business, no fun is allowed.

The problem is foraging is an extremely repetitive action in most cases, just like most things that are botted. If you are going for efficiency with your foraging you probably will walk the same route every time. If you are in an empty area (where foraging is best) you're unlikely to see changes in the landscape. Also, IMO having new players around isn't really a good thing as they cause the map to reload less and take some of the forageables you could be getting and local trade isn't really important at all once you're as established as most the players who are botting are.

Aside from rye, since I'm counting his input already, can any other uninvolved party confirm there is no keylogger in the scripts?

I checked the part of the script that was in pastebin, it didn't contain key logger

I like foraging too, I like boating around...I also have a sad liking for farming especially when im not feeling too sociable or great, it's great mind cleanser. the only aspects of the game I don't like is hunting and mining. and hunting I will do if need be like early world...but given a choice I wouldn't bother.

as for mains, I have always kept 2 characters, a main who is generally acting as LS and a forager/hunter/industry alt....any others I don't regard as alts since they just hold keys or used for trading etc so they don't have any real statistics and I don't grind them or provide them with curios. I cant handle too many alts...

I've always had 1 character, never botted curios. The only bots I used were starve and carrot farming. Oh and well to barrel
