Yeah the key is to be under the radar, moreso than alone. Anyone can always walk past, but they probably won't unless you give them a reason to. I don't think I came across any other hearthlings near the plot or even on any foraging/exploration trips.
Then someone leaves a scent and 24 hours later someone bashes a gate in.
