People are getting murdered left and right and the population's shrinking.

Yep, that's detroit.

It's not exactly the feeling i have about brodgar.

Yes people are getting murdered but probably not more than in the beginning. Open city doen't mean peace and love and beautiful poney city. Some seem to forget this point and to ignore basic safety rules like key alt, palissade,etc... .

I'm not sure population is shrinking. Everytime i make a round in the city, i see new plots, new roads and town is now pretty huge. There are only 2 or 3 clearly abandonned plots and they use to be reoccupied by someone rather quickly.

Not everyone stay in town ? Of, course. Many players make a test, some like and stay, others leave. That's life...

You don't see many people in town? Don't expect to. There are 25 SG in the world map and usually let's say 625 players connected. This makes 25 players connected by SG. Brodgar occupies about 1/25 of its SG so statisticaly you may find only 1 or 2 people around you... City chat usually shows 2 to 10 players around, wich is not so bad after all...

All considered, life in brodgar, at least until now, is much less dangerous than hermit life and it gives much more opportunities to find nice people than hermit life. Maybe Atlanta would be better as a name than Detroit...

Detroit lives!
The low life has lost its appeal
And I'm tired of walking these streets

I'm not sure if I see a defense, or 8 guys running from a Silkmoth on the other side of a wall...
