Either I can't remember seeing someone try it, or it's never worked, because I haven't experienced it with any of the fights I've been in.

It's quite a bit different when there are multiple people and everyone is changing their positioning all the time. If you drop back on the group chasing to use a move on a guy, he will run back while his teammates will swoop in from the sides. If you keep chasing then you will be netted by a wall of your opponents and get ripyoloed, no??
