Within the context of HnH, the claim to the name does make sense.

If someone claims that another takes their previous name, then they're called out for BS for making the claim, then clearly some already perceive the name as untouchable as it has some contextual history here in the game.

Popular fiction is aside the point.

I wasn't going to mention this, but I ought to now, that another solution is for the group previously known as Winterfell would find it prudent to announce a new name to avoid confusion given there's a new group who yoinked the title.

I imagine someone thought it was WF was because the village marked on the map has a GoT name, and thus must be WF (which is isn't).
