New Players

Postby FFDreke » Thu Aug 08, 2013 10:49 am

I get that a lot of people have complete and utter disregard for other people, sans how they can take advantage of them or torture them, and that there's nothing for it but to make yourself able to handle it.

...And I'm going to complain about it anyway.

I started playing a week ago, and some of my friends have shared my interest. I started a camp on the river, bad idea, I know. It's been steadily growing, and we've been thinking about moving, since their are people who are just rotten by nature, and its hard work starting something defensible.

We want to be a peaceful village, that just does our own thing, and maybe open trades with neighbors and such, but...

Every day for a few days now, some assholes come by and steal 20 something leather at a time, and sabotage what they can't make off with.

How the hell are we supposed to progress at all in a game where only some 500 people are ever on at a time, and more than half of them are such downright corrupt fucks that they can't even respect who's even worth griefing? Taking from someone on par with you, or far superior is fine. Bullying brand new players, whatever, idgaf. But why take from a camp, that's not even halfway to village status, that is completely isolated and passive? It's an embarrassment that these people stomp around on the playground. Sabotaging easy targets makes you a coward fuck.

Welcome to haven and hearth friend, where the beast in every man is let out of its cage and run wild, and these are core game mechanics.:

Early world exploit: Put your hearthfire inside a cave, then hold shift to position a claim right in front of a cave. After 8 hours the claim will be unbreakable. Since your hearthfire is inside the cave, you can still get back inside, and leave, but nobody will be able to enter, effectively making you unraidable for the first 3-7 days. Enjoy

They were all real life friends. They've since abandoned this game, but I persevere. I was here before them, and I didn't up-sell it to them, they gravitated to it naturally, as I invested more time. We were all well on our way to having niche' roles, and I had lawspeaking, we just needed some leather (that was being robbed daily) for palisades, and our second camp location was going to be put together. So it was just some nearby raiders, and I can tolerate that to continue. No sweat off my brow to be hermiting again, as I'm wiser than a week ago.

I'll find those fucks again one day and murder them. Period.

Thats a game on a dark and corruptes world... you'll have to find ways to surpass it.

And friends are also hard to find... don't go trusting anyone easily or you'll be backstabbed

Take care, and good luck :)

I'm sorry to disappoint, but this happens very rarely in H&H.
Your being raided sets you back, pushes them forward and while you attempt to get back up on your feet they're already OP.

Some people say this is impossible, but it's really not, depends how you look at it.
If you look at it as taking a walk with your sheep, your defenses being fences and not investing a point into combat skills because you don't want to hurt anyone, it's impossible.
However, you can set up defenses, take every safety measure and have a way of defending yourself, you can do it.
As you said, it's a bad idea to settle near water. What do you learn from it? It's not "stop hermitting", it's don't settle near water!
So basically, tl;dr:
Safety first, you can't be a successful little hermittage if there's a chance of getting squashed every second.

There are plenty of hermits who play this game and effectively avoid most raiding. But it's a lot of work. Like multiple layers of brick walls on a smallish looking settlement type work. Plus you need to know your area, supergrids are more or less hostile entirely depending on the primary faction living there (if any), as well as if there's raider settlements in the area.

I was perfectly surviving on a single palisade for a last 2 month in the DIS region, near the lake...

Just don't show others you have something of value to loot.
I hate you! Yes, you!
How does it matter when you die? Today? In hundred years? What will be left of you after millenia?
