In early world prices went from 20-40 pearls, depending on sellers and buyers. At this moment there are not alot bones available yet lot of people want them. I'd say 30-35 pearls is fair price.

Well, if I say starting price is, for example, 10 pearls, I make a commitment, and if nobody but one person make bet, I must give him this bone for 10 pearls. I know some people, who can buy this bone for 30-35 pearls without auction, so why would I set lower starting price? it's unnecessary risk.

Well, if you guys are hell bent on making this like a proper auction then what you do OP, is set a reserve price which the opening bid has to at least match. E.g. "Selling q300 troll bone for pearls with a reserve of 20 pearls (q10+)"

Because that's what auctions are for.
If your starting price is really high, might as well make it a buy-out price.
Your starting price needs to be lower than the usual price of a troll bone, you see. That way, it attracts people who don't have enough pearls (35) to pay for a troll bone so they place a low bet in the auction.
