It had to be refilled every 12 hour, but I never woke up in time, or had to go to work or be somewhere else.

... I want to commit fully....
...I am also independent and have free time (meaning I can play every day if I wish to)...

Then make steel :p

I can make steel if I really want to, I just need to wake up in the middle of my sleep.

you sleep for more than twelve hours at a time? On a regular basis? That's quite a lot.

You don't need charcoal for fuel, you can put wood blocks in it. It's like a kiln or an oven not an ore smelter.

If I want to :-D

Anyway I didnt try very hard, Im sure I can make steel if I put effort into it. Like you said, wake up at a certain time, schedule my playing time, etc.

Tbh, I have problems with both steel and silk, so I know how you feel, but with careful planning and alarms it is possible, lol, it's work that gets in the way more than sleep I find - or having to get up in time to refuel and then forgetting because my mind is on the day ahead.
It is satisfying though to make your first steel, just like all new finds and builds are.

DO IT!

Good luck with finding a village though. :)

Steel isn't easy to do solo, but its easy doable if you are what you called yourself - heavy grinding hermit (in a positive way). U probably do realise that you can fill it up anytime you want to right? And you can use blocks, branches, coal, whatever you want. So all you need to do is prepare wrough, coal and fuel for whole run, then make timer ingame + if you don't trust it enough, also on your phone. I always made timers on 6 hours and 10 hours (2 timers), in case i missed first one, second one got me.

And I think I made quite few steel rounds solo this world and few other fellas with me did their rounds aswell, so keep your heads up and just be "on timers" that 3 days when you are making it. Outcome makes it worth.

On side note, you mentioned you would join big village, who would give you curios + equipment. This is alot to ask from someone with only 19 forum posts and not being well known, so I suggest you try to raise the character on your own, which is easy enough if you only ask for maybe monocle + rcape so you see curios from scratch.

Good luck.

A dozen people pmed me since this post made less than 24 hours ago offering me to join their village and would give me equips, food and curious. The highest commodity isnt these things which you mentioned, the highest and most valuable commodity is man power. I offered that, loyalty and dedication to anyone that would help start me off and people are acting like im asking them to do me a favor. Its ok I already found 2 people that have the same interests as me and were going to start hermiting. Also I had some great and amazing offers from good villages and genuine people, in the end it didnt out weight the freedom of being a hermit. This post re kindled my love of hermitting and realized that if villages are any representation of the real world, out of the few diamond in the rough genuine people, most are going to be just petty and illogical. The funniest reply I got so far was a guy telling me its too much to ask for food. Really? a day one character can fill up his food and curio bar in half an hour. Im sure the top 3 guilds have characters walking around with enough stats to one shot a bear. The other day I took a newbie character with 20 MM and quality 15 sling and took out a heard of mouflons out in 20 minutes and could barely fit all the meat in my cupboards. I must not be seeing the picture here. Anyway if people think my offer isnt good, that they think sub quality semi tier gears are harder to part than a potential long term and mature player to their faction, then I gladly withdraw my offer.
