I'm on my own at the moment and doing ok; got a farm going, kiln, oven, killed a bear couple of days ago, just finished a chicken coop today. But a palisaded hermitage just 5-6 screens up the river seems to have been raided and destroyed quite recently and I'm not relishing the prospect of the same happening to me on someone's whim. So, I'm up for your offer.

Do I just start a new char with the given Hearth Secret and we'll see how things go?

You can bring your current one, as long as you've enough strength yo break your hearthfire (25 str and a stone axe, or 16 str with a pickaxe), I'll be able to teleport you close to me.
If you want to bring anything with you, make several alternate characters, have them break their hearthfires, so I can teleport them too(your character's original hearthfire can be broken with base strength)
However, if you'd rather just create a new character that's perfectly fine.
You'll however be unable to spawn on that hearthfire.
