Any bastion of civilisation left?

Postby sildarion » Tue Nov 25, 2014 1:05 pm

So i've been playing this game for about 2 weeks now. My characters have been drowned, bashed to death by aurouchs and bears, sunk by players, murdered by spenser (a russian guy who made me his kin and then came by with a friend and killed me for no clear reason). In general i'd say this is an interesting game but I fear the barbarians are totally on the winning side in it. Currently my lastest new char is wandering the world in search of any last bastion of civilisation. All I've found so far is corpses in empty hovels and villages. If you are living in what might be the last bastion of civilisation in this game, do send me a message and possibly an invite. I'm from europe and am playing this game way too much :)

I did see a huge city that I couldn't get to at a place where the rivers make a cross-shaped intersection, but aside from that, it's just ruins, ruins, ruins, petty claims, box fortresses, wilderness, and more ruins. And by golly, there's more ruins than there is pristine wilderness! I'm not sure whether anyone's winning or if there's just something going on that leaves everything blasted heath covered in swaths of pavement and rotting pumpkins.

Oh, I also saw a really cool giant mermaid fresco that was left intact, but the settlement next to it was ruins, again. There really are a lot of those.

People quit the game or die. It's very common to have a random raider hit your location and to book it. It's also very common to die to the wildlife.
Also be wary of what you consider ruins. Many players own multiple locations and don't bother to tend to their gardens. Sometimes the gardens are part of the decoration. I've had lots of new players deem my home a ruin because no one was standing at the gate to say hi to them.

Yeah, the places I'm talking about, if they have a gate, it's the only thing left standing within a quarter mile. Most of the time, there's nothing more than a few inches tall except pumpkins, yet there's signs that there used to be dozens of buildings and double walls. It's spooky.

On the other hand, I can't really blame people for not building on top of these ruins, since most of them are in pretty shoddy locations, and they didn't take very good care of their local environment while putting up all those wooden constructions, so the only things of value to attract new settlers are pre-paved land, nearby water, and if they're very lucky, some chickens, and that's not really more appealing than untamed woodlands. The best sites are claimed and kept, of course.

Part of this is probably because in H&H individual farmers don't require acres upon acres of land to till, they can feed themselves on a garden with a footprint that's smaller than their house. This means pre-cleared land has no value, except maybe for creature spawns.
