tbh devs cant compete with mods, there's just crazy features out there, there's no right way to play and people always want more, so mod away

I think this stops being reasonable in a game with forced PVP where losing has significant consequences. Sadbear, Bleh and I played vanilla briefly last world before making a new client after Rawrzfen stopped being supported. I had trouble 3v5ing people I could normally 1v5 easily when my teammates were better than me.

I mean, sure what the plebs have access to will never be 1:1 as good as private clients, and it's unrealistic for the devs to keep up in that regard. But it's not "kinda okay" verse the gold standard. It's dogshit missing completely essential features like the ability to drink. Stuff that was in our client within an hour of somebody first opening the IDE

I literally went to meteor fights on shubla's client in w12, I could've probably just used amber for pvp, I used shubla's for other features (which had nothing to do with pvp). It lacked a few things private clients have, but it still was astronomically better than the vanilla client.

It's not "super secret private client stuff" that make a huge difference in pvp. Sure, every now and then I hear some cringe exploits appear like bandying 100 chicks to block someone when they run, but the vanilla client is literally like trying to compete with a professional NFL player, while you're in a wheelchair and one of your arms is missing... AND BOTH OF YOUR EYES ARE BEING ACTIVELY STABBED BY 4 KNIVES.

Loftar can add all of the few good features that makes this huge difference in less than 3 weeks (assuming he spends more than 12 minutes per week developing his "passion project").
There's no super secret features in any private clients that give them a 2000% advantage. We were literally using the ardennes bootleg of a bootleg of a bootleg of a bootleg (that had like half of the features broken) at the start of w13, and everyone was doing all right.

There's no "devs can't compete with mods".

But when the devs are half-assing everything, that's something else.

Remember when they started adding the stuff from the list last year? We got water container indicators, but no fucking drink button.

It isnt just pvp that affected by the vanilla client. Even just doing base things are inconvenient with vanilla, it would be like running a marathon naked and without shoes to try and get a decent quality fighter using only vanilla. Its been missing some essential stuff for a hot minute.

Honestly its the biggest detractor for me to bring new people into the game. I can't be like this is the best game ever i spend literally every free minute i have but for it to be playable (not competitive just enjoyable) you need to download some shady third party client that could put your whole comp at risk.

I indeed suggest J&Lo spend a day playing Ardennes bootleg client (this was the last one I played this world before quitting) to get the feel.

I do not participate in PvP, so here are some foragers features from top of my head that make it a must for me:
- Ability to unlock camera, my fav is orthographic smooth with no strict angles (I CBA to type in commands in console)
- Pressing Q to interact with nearest object (i.e. pick up a forageble or close the gate)
- Ability to move around minimap, resize it etc.
- Sidebars, toolbelt & hands window etc. - idk, might be a feature in default, not sure.
- Readable font (sorry, the fancy default font in HnH is barely readable)
- Automatic inventory and containers sorting by quality or other parameters. But by Quality is the most important.
- Red circles around dangerous animals. Death without these.

Also hiding tress is a big thing for foraging, to just be able to see. But it's "ugly", so it prolly can be done in a better way in default. Maybe make them real semi-transparent with dithering?..

Another thing that I really hate, that was mentioned in this thread before and is not addressed by any client - is that when you go in combat your hotkeys get rebinded to combat moves, and I absolutely hate that cause it makes you do accidents with muscle memory...

There are probably more things to add, but I haven't played in few month. I'll add if I remember.

a better in depth tutorial would boost player retention by like 80%. Lack of combat tutorial and how to properly evade and run away from hostile players is really showing, we run in to groups of semi hostile hermits and they always get shit on in like the span of 30 seconds making huge mistakes that couldve been avoided easily had they know how it worked.

  • missing speed buffs
  • not clicking rabbit for speed
  • Going in to a river while multiple people are caught up and get kod in water
  • Thinking they are safe in boat/snek
  • Falling for meda cleave
  • Fueling our bloodlust with shit like sideswipe
  • Not using opk at all
  • Getting rawhided
  • Not rawhiding
  • Running in circles instead of straight line
  • Not wearing armor XD
  • Having a total of 9 liters of water

Im sure there are more that i cant think of rn but u get what i mean.

Cleaving u when my combat meditation is full so the cooldown on cleave is very low and hope you cleave me so i can get a free double opk cleave in.
